Rachel & Jack’s wedding was a very happy fit for my kind of photography. I like to describe a large part of what I do as storytelling – I want my photos to give a real feel for what a wedding day was like, not just record who was there and how they looked. And storytelling was the theme for the day here (Rachel works in publishing so books are a big part of their lives). I’d been tipped off to keep an eye out for the occasional literary reference or feature through the course of the day. Well they weren’t kidding! Readings, table names, an individually chosen book for every guest as a wedding favour, even a cake in the shape of a stack of Penguin Classics… quality!
No need to worry about keeping the bride and groom apart before the ceremony so that they didn’t catch a glimpse of each other – Rachel & Jack had chosen to make their entrance together, so they were able to steal a few little moments before the ceremony and after their interviews while the registrars made their introductions. All extremely sweet, and that just sets the scene for the day really: nice and relaxed, nothing too formal… they even managed to squeeze in a quick visit to the pub in their wedding attire at the end of the couple photographs, before heading on to the reception. I often advise that it’s nice for the bride and groom to make sure they carve out some real time for themselves as part of the wedding day – it’s amazing how quickly it flashes by if you’re not paying attention. Well that’s the way to do it!
The reception was taking place a short car ride away (and check out that fab little wedding car) at the lovely Bourne Valley Inn near Andover. Happy indeed are the wedding guests who are greeted on arrival with all-you-can-eat homemade cakes right next to the bar. That should keep them occupied until the wedding breakfast. I’m a firm believer in pubs as reception venues – if you’re after a space guests will feel comfortable and relaxed in then a pub’s got to be right up there, surely – and they had done a beautiful job here of decking it all out…
There’s nothing nicer in this job that seeing a couple who are so clearly made for each other. Well I definitely saw another one that day. Huge congratulations Rachel & Jack – what an absolutely gorgeous Winter wedding. Wishing you many happy, book-filled years together!
