Stunning Walhampton School, deep into the New Forest, feels like it was made for wedding photography. This absolute jaw-dropper of a building with its wood-panelled walls, grand staircase and balcony, arches and columns, sits with acre upon acre of beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens, woodland and even its own series of lily-covered lakes. Add into the mix an approach through the heathland of the Forest with its ponies, donkeys and deer and you've got all the ingredients for a wedding celebration which will live long in your guests' memories. For Claire and Paul it very clearly ticked every box, and it was easy to see why.
Bridal prep with bridesmaids, flower girls and family took place off-site, while the groom and groomsmen arrived at the school for finishing touches. The set-up at the school is wonderful for a wedding, and for wedding photography with so many superb backdrops and character in every corner. Guests enter through the main door into a large hall (which later in the day serves as the main evening party space) before passing through the bar area to the magnificent wood-panelled main hall, the setting for the ceremony itself. Elsewhere another set of side rooms (including on this occasion the headmaster's own office!) were available, which handily meant that once the bridal party made it to the school they were able to stay well clear and out of sight of the groom and guests as they arrived.
The drive through this part of the New Forest is particularly beautiful. Sat on the coast just outside Lymington, it can be approached either from that side or via Beaulieu and across the heathland. Either way it's a stunning part of the world, and rest assured you and your guests will be seeing plenty of those famous New Forest ponies en route. The magnificence of the countryside then extends through the school's grounds, where alongside more formally tended lawns and gardens you can also take advantage of the school's own lakes and woodlands - a really wonderful addition, especially when it comes to those couple portraits (and sneaking away from all the busy-ness of the day for a few quieter moments alone).
Straight out of the ceremony room and into the blazing sunshine of another one of those 2026 heatwaves. Claire and Paul were greeted with enthusiastic confetti throwing before everyone made their way out into the gardens of the school for an afternoon drinks reception on the lawn. Total English country wedding vibes with scones, strawberries and cream. The shadier spots were at a bit a premium in the serious heat of the early afternoon.
There are many options at Walhampton for both your group photos and your couple portraits. For the latter we opted to escape down to the lakes and woodland - a short stroll down past the playing fields - to make the most of the shady cover and carve out a few quiet moments for ourselves while guests started to make their way back through to the hall, which had now been utterly transformed ready for the wedding breakfast. We would then be able to step out back into the more immediate and formal gardens later in the evening for some further portraits when it was all a little quieter out there and the strong light of day had softened into the golden hour.
Before we got to all that though we still had a meal, speeches, cake cutting and first dance to factor in...
As the celebrations moved into the evening the blazing sunshine of the day faded into the softer light of golden hour Claire, Paul and I stepped back out into the grounds to the back of the school for a few quiet moments and a final set of couple portraits. The sunken garden in particular is a beautiful spot, and just a few steps away from the main building so it's very easy to make the most of at this time for wedding portrait photographs, without feeling that you are leaving your party behind. Despite all this I still feel like we were only able to scratch the surface when it came to photo opportunities at Walhampton School; there's simply so much to explore and make use of I think it would be possible to shoot dozens of weddings here and still be finding new angles and backdrops every time. Hopefully I'll be back at Walhampton again and able to put this theory to the test before long!
It's always exciting to discover a new wedding venue to photograph, and Walhampton School was an absolute dream. Huge thanks go out to the events team at the school who were absolutely meticulous throughout the day and helped everything run so smoothly, providing access to those harder-to-reach spots, and keeping me hydrated on one of the hottest days of the year.
